Are you a parent looking for a good school to admit your children in? What kind of a future do you envision for your child? What are your child’s interests and aptitudes? Are you concerned about the quality of education your children will receive? Are you in a dilemma about the two most popular boards of education in India? Should you opt for CBSE or ICSE?
These are the common questions that haunt a parent when he seeks admission for his children in school. Parents are often confused about the choice of boards. The following article will help you gain a clear insight into the ICSE board of education.
What is ICSE?
The Indian Certificate of Secondary Education was convened by the Local Examinations Syndicate of the University of Cambridge. ICSE – Indian Certificate of Secondary Education is an examination that is conducted for Grade X and ISC – Indian School Certificate for Grade XII.
It is governed by the Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations – CISCE, a non-government, private board for school education in India. It is a private body that was founded in year 1956 to set and adapt University of Cambridge’s examination system to India. Who can write ICSE exams?
Only regular students pursuing studies from schools affiliated to the CISCE are allowed to take the examinations. Private students are not allowed to appear for ICSE and the ISE examinations.
What is the choice of subjects offered by ICSE?
The subjects offered by ICSE can be divided into three groups:
Group 1: The following subjects are compulsory for all candidates:
English, History, Civics and Geography, and Indian Language.
20% weightage for internal assessment in group 1
Group 2: Candidates must select any two subjects from the following:
Mathematics, Science, Environmental Science, Agriculture Science, Computer Science, Commercial Studies, Technical Drawing, Economics, A Modern Foreign Language, A Classical Language.
20% weightage is awarded for internal assessment in group 2
Group 3: Candidates must select any one from the following subjects:
Computer Applications, Economic Applications, Commercial Applications, Home Science, Art, Performing Arts, Cookery, Fashion Designing, Physical Education, Yoga, Technical Drawing Applications.
There is 50% weightage awarded to the chosen subject in group 3.
Is there flexibility in choice of subjects?
Yes. Due to the vast array of subjects offered and the system of examination it follows, there is equal emphasis on the study of language, art and science in ICSE. Students enjoy the flexibility of selecting specific subjects. There is more choice and freedom for students to identify their interests and aptitude and decide the final subjects.
Do ICSE certificates enjoy validation?
CBSE certificates enjoy more local credence. ICSE certificates find validity across the globe, especially by foreign schools and universities.
Syllabus and teaching methodology:
The ICSE board lays emphasis on the overall growth and development of the student. The ICSE syllabus is cogent and is considered to be extensive. The syllabus is geared towards imparting analytical skills, problem-solving skills and practical knowledge to the students. The syllabus that the ICSE board follows is very comprehensive and complete, covering all fields with equal importance. The teaching methodology adopted in ICSE schools is interactive with emphasis on enabling students to learn through experience and experimentation rather than mere rote learning.
Attention to English language:
The medium of instruction in the ICSE board is English and the study of English literature is compulsory. Students have to write two examinations – one for English language and one in English Literature. The attention and importance given to English proficiency enables students of TOEFL,GRE and GMAT examinations to score well. The curriculum and the detailed study of English language and literature adopted by the ICSE board is beneficial for students who aspire to pursue careers in the fields of Management, Humanities, English Literature etc. However, students aiming to score a good rank in PMT, IIT-JEE, NEET and other entrance exams which help students to study and qualify as doctors and engineers are at a disadvantage since most of these exams are based on CBSE syllabus and pattern of examinations.
What is the Grading system followed in the ICSE?
Students are graded on marks.. The marks are shown in numbers and this gives the students a clear idea about their score and also enables them to compare themselves with other students.
What are the disadvantages of ICSE?
Students would have to study and write Physics, Chemistry and Biology as three separate papers. However CBSE students write only one exam in Science. In the case of Social Studies, CBSE students write one paper, whereas ICSE students write two examinations for History and Geography separately.
The volume and content of the ICSE syllabus is extensive. ICSE believes in imparting deeper knowledge of concepts along with their practical application. This might prove to be a big burden to the average learner.
The number of subjects to study and write exams in the ICSE system might prove be burdensome for the average learner.
The ICSE syllabus is compliant to the syllabus among the common wealth countries. Hence, the difficulty level and the standard of subjects followed might be high. This again might prove detrimental to the average learner.
Though the ICSE syllabus facilitates deeper understanding and better life skills and analytical skills, it is not advantageous when it comes to pursuing further education, due to a lack of leniency in evaluating papers after an ISC examination.
If a student with an ISC background aims at cracking PMT, IIT-JEE, NEET and other entrance exams, he might have to take extra coaching. This might prove to be a financial burden to the parental and an additional burden to the student.
It is advised that parents consider the pros and cons of the ICSE board carefully before admitting their children in school. They must take into consideration the interests, capability and aptitude of their children before making a decision.
